Is it true
Hi everyone. We were told that if you quit drinking all at once, like cold turkey it can be bad for you, like you can get seizures. Is that true? I’ve only been sober for seven days so far and don’t feel bad. Thx
Yes, quitting cold turkey can be dangerous. But if you've gone 7 days without any ill effects, you probably won't have them. Just stay sober cause stopping and starting makes the w/d worse over time.
Hi Smegasaur and welcome
Yeah its true but it doesn't happen to everybody.
It usually happens pretty early in the piece so if you've been completely sober for a week, I wouldn't worry too much about it

Hi Smegasaur - it's great to have you with us.
We can't give medical advice, but if you have 7 days sober I agree that you're probably out of danger. Can you check with your doctor to be sure?
Hope you'll keep posting. Congrats on your sober time.

The guidance on this is non-existent. Although I was/am alcohol dependent, I was quite a “light” drinker it seems. I was on one bottle of wine a day - which is an intolerable amount, no way can a liver cope with that on a daily basis - and later about half that. Everyone should seek medical advice before quitting, but I refuse to believe anyone drinking up to a bottle of wine a day needs to taper. But whenever I saw a medical person about my drinking, e.g. to have a blood test or counselling, they said I must taper and not quit so abruptly.
My problem with so-called tapering is it should be done with guidance and a timeline, otherwise it can become an excuse to continue drinking (I know, I was a drinker) or drag on for months or years. No one should be deciding themselves to taper. It’s needs medical guidance.
