California Sober

Why not call it moderation? That is what it is, right? As someone who lives in Cali and is SOBER, I personally take offense to the media calling someone who uses weed and alcohol "California Sober" ...... Offense? Not really. I just think its not the best terminology. What say you, SR?

Even more so these days, I give less and less credence to what people say than what they do. If one really wants to, you can literally find something to disagree with or be "outraged" by in minutes just about anywhere on the internet. The best medicine for me in that regards is to just not look in the first place ;-)

I was really being light hearted about this. I find the terminology funny. Tis all.

Having lived in SoCal and worked in CA plenty.... I can personally attest to the fallacy of 'california sober'.

Northern California and Southern California are two completely different places.. just sayin'..

Hadn't heard the term "California Sober" before.. it figures.. wouldn't know I spent more than half my life there (Nor Cal).

It is kind of a funny term but maybe it explains why I had such a hard time committing to being "completely sober" lol.

True dat about NorCal and SoCal. I can't believe over half of my life has been spent in NorCal, just doesn't seem possible, but the calculator says otherwise. My definition of sober is strictly personal to me and only applicable to me but has far reaching effects that extend way beyond me, myself, and I; and that, I need to remember.

It's a cute saying, but it misses the point. Or maybe the purpose of the saying is to avoid making a point. Does "California sober" mean these people are alcoholics, or dope fiends, or does it mean they are from California? There's a big difference there. People that drink and use weed are all over the place. Some of them have a problem. Some don't. The term Alabama sober would be equally vague, although equally appropriate or inappropriate, but probably more offensive to Alabamans than Californians. It's fun to take digs at California, even though it is, or at least was a few years ago, the world's 7th largest economy, and must be doing something right. Another similar saying is what is known as the "California stop," meaning just slowing down at a stop sign, which gets you a ticket in most other states. I spent 6 months there preparing my boat for it's journey. I could see why my relatives migrated there back in the 50s. It's a little too crowded and fast paced in the southern end for me, but it was unusually friendly and hospitable, and until recently, a climate that most would consider a paradise.

I heard this term yesterday for the first time yesterday in an article about demi lavato and her recovery after overdosing on opiates. I thought she meant using weed since it's legal there, which I don't really see an issue with. I've heard of people using it to help stay off of opiates and harder drugs. Not sure about the alcohol part...doesn't quite sit right with me, but that may just be a personal thing.

I first heard the term on an episode of "Mom" and thought they made it up until I heard Demi Lovato use the phrase this week. I assumed it meant just smoking weed, but I think she also said alcohol in moderation. Sounds like dancing with the devil to me... I hope we don't hear of a catastrophic downfall for her again, but I wouldn't be surprised. Moderation doesn't work for people like me.

What? Who is Demi Lovato? I’ve never heard of “California sober”. So confused.

It never occurred to me to name my sobriety after a state. Same thing with my drinking. And the unhappy show that followed.

What's California's last name when it describes people who are drinking around the clock while their lives are falling apart?

I took it to mean that the person is sober, but not really sober. They were California sober. Smoking weed probably. Shouldn't diminish people for their efforts.

It is dumb term that has been around for several years now. I feel like I would have said it in my early 20s before alcohol became a raging monster and found it funny. Now I just roll my eyes.
Whatever, I am in California but for real sober. I'll take it.
