It just starts with not drinking that day. Its a tough decision but a wise one. I dont know your story or how much you drink but a dr visit cant hurt before or while you are quitting. Withdrawals can be major or minor. I drank a ton(fifth a day every day all day as of late. pint of rum a day for at least 15 years with 0 days not drinking) and only had minor withdrawals. Others can not eat for a week, cant sleep, cant do much, are dizzy, anxiety, etc... Best thing to do is just quit and stay quit and see how it goes. I'm on day 15 of my first time quitting ever,(after close to 30 years of drinking) and I can honestly tell you I started looking better in 2 days and I feel way better today. Sucked being wasted all day and feeling like I had a band around my head and just swimming in alcohol. Now? Way better. You wont regret it. I promise. Out of all the posts I have read here and otherwise I have never seen anyone say they wished they were still drinking. You can do it.
Hello and welcome, you'll find a lot of support here, so you're in the right place.
At the end of my drinking, I was afraid to stop and afraid to drink. So I can relate.
What are you scared about? Maybe if you write about it here it will help.
I'm sure many of us can relate.
Again, welcome. I hope you stick around and read and post. We're all here for you.

Welcome, Lortle. I'm so glad you've decided to quit. I was terrified to let go of it when I first came here - but reading all the stories & advice really helped. I found the courage to stop after decades. My biggest mistake was thinking I could control it by using willpower. It took me too long to admit it wasn't ever going to be possible.
We're here to help - you can do this.

Hello, Lortle. I'm glad you're here. Like others have already posted, people on this site are understanding and supportive.
You can post often, ask questions, and feel supported.
Take one day at a time when you quit. We will be here for you.

So you found the willpower to do that. Think of it like scattering ashes. A final goodbye. The hard work begins now but if you look at this like a death or the breakup of a relationship that can't be saved. What do you do in those situations? You go through all the emotions and you adjust because you have no choice. You got this!

Welcome. I can't drink normal either. And, ya know, never really wanted to. I drink to get blotto drunk. 1 drink? Why bother? Calories. No oblivion. Oh and all the horrid obsession that returns...the wanting more. Oh man, that sucks big time. There is never enough. 6am, detoxing, waiting for the store to open. Shaking, panic. Oh god I don't miss that.
Don't be afraid to get help. Detox doesn't have to be a horrible life threatening experience. I don't know how deep you are in, but medical detox can make the beginning days so much easier. Still not fun, but at least a little tolerable.
You can do this. Embrace the suck and move through it. Staying stuck in the cycle of addiction is far more difficult in the long run!
