Alcoholic Neuropothy and impotence

Hi all,

So I’m 25 years old and have suffered from ED for the last 2 years!
I’ve looked into every possible cause and have recently come across alcoholic neuropothy.
Upon reading symptoms this is something heavy drinkers come across, I do drink a fair amount over the weekends, 10-15 units to be precise, not every weekend, I had a 2 year break and have only recently been back on the drink, maybe every other weekend, would this be enough to cause alcoholic neuropothy and cause my ED?
I’ve seen that this is a symptom of this and can only think my weekend drinking habits may have caused this?

Hi Gavlar

I would not dare to guess or even give my opinion on something like this.
I think that you should seek a professional in that field rather than guestimating on possibilities and then worrying about it.
Stress always gets the headlines as a cause of this issue.

All the best! Dusty😎

Funny, i was diagnosed today with neuopathy almost definitely caused by alcohol. Fortunately its in my ankles and is very minor...the equipment is working better than fine. I'm also in my mid 50s and drank heavily off and on, mostly on, for years.

Sounds like your diagnosis was by Dr. Google. Go talk to an actual doc, impotence can have many causes and treatments

Hi and Welcome Gavalar09

we really can't give you medical advice here - in any case you'd be better off seeing your Dr to find out for sure if there's a link for you. I have neuropathy (not alcohol related) and it's not affected me in that way.

Sexual dysfunction is is pretty common when people quit heavy drinking.

I'm not sure if that applies in your case if you're a weekend binger, but it's something worth get checked out over.

Alcohol and impotence

Hi all,

Thank you all for the feedback.
I’ve been to doctors over the last few years for this and have never gotten to the bottom of it.
I just get ED drugs thrown at me and told it all performance related, which confuses me because I can’t even get erect when I’m alone...

It’s true that I have googled it, most of which I find does say binge drinking can cause impotence but I find it weird as I have no other symptoms I.e tingling in hands and feet, numbness etc.

But the binge drinking is the only thing I can possibly attribute to my numb penis and impotence.

Thank you all.

Hi mindfulman,

Thanks for the reply.
How heavily did you drink?
I know all people react differently to different things but I’m just curious?

If any part of you is numb long term, I think you really need to see a neurologist.

Thank you Dee.
I’m trying to book in with the doctor but any time I’ve brought up about my penis being numb they attribute it to anxiety.

It’s not easy being you and impotent because doctors just don’t believe you...

Heavily off and on for years, with multiple self detoxes. Last binge waa about 2 months of 20-25 drinks a day around the clock.

ED can be largely psychological. Psychiatrist and urologist can be helpful.

Again my symptoms are peripheral. Once I stopped drinking I was constantly like a rock for much of the time. And I am in my mid 50s but I have always had a monstrous libido.

Sorry if that was TMI.

Oh wow, 20-25 a day for 2 months!
Have you been off the drink for a while now then?
And did you reverse the symptoms you had, or see any improvements?

It gives me a bit of hope that I may not be suffering neuropothy then but I guess I can’t be sure really.

I’ll look at speaking to the doctors again, blood tests all came back fine and I’m really at a point where I can only say this is the last thing that needs checking, after 2 years constantly at the doctors with it.

Thank you anyway!

Hi Anna,

Thank you! Been talking to them the last two years but they never coincided it with my weekend drinking.
Al I get thrown at me is viagra though which is pretty disheartening, I really just want to know what’s causing it

I see these threads come up all the time and just shake my head. it could be the stress of worrying about alcoholic neuropathy that's causing this problem or some other concerns. are you depressed ? are you sleeping well? your numb penis may have something to do with whats going on in you're head. 2 quick tests at the neuroligists and in less than an hour of your time you will be walking out with peace of mind....at least as the alcoholic neuropathy is concerned...listen to the drs.

did you see the part where dr google defines it as a cause from "long term alcoholism". I was a hard core alcoholic for longer than you have been alive when I was diagnosed in my mid fifties. I have also talked to a bunch of fellow AAers on the subject and their story was very similar to my own. of course there can always be exceptions to the rule and you may be one of them but I doubt it.

and by the way i'm 60 and my tool works just fine.

Hi markinny,

No I’m not depressed and I do sleep well, get 6-8 hours easily each night.

I’ve read up on dr.google and it also says it can be caused by heavy episodic drinking, which I guess you’d class as binge drinking.

Glad to hear you’re still in working order my friend. Of course I hope I end up with a similar story some time soon!

The issues could be physical or mental. The only way to know is to work with a doctor. I can't stress enough to stay off google and to stop diagnosing yourself. You will give yourself every ailment under the sun. Start with a Urologist and go from there. Let us know the results as it helps others who are googling the same problem...😁

Hi J50,

Been to so many doctors over the last 2 years I’ve lost count. On top of that I’ve had 2 urologists who can’t explain it and just hand me viagra, which doesn’t work..

Testosterone came back higher than normal and all other bloods were fine, and I’m getting some again next week. It’s definitely isn’t mental as I don’t have morning wood, which rules it out so it can only be physical unfortunately. But so far, all roads have led nowhere...

Usually low t leads ed, but if yours is high and you aren't getting morning erections there could be hormonal issues. Have you seen an Endocrinologist?

I didn't mean to make light of your situation, as I'm having my own issues, but I would be careful reading too much and try to see the right doctors who can help treat the problem.

Also, did your Urologist say there were any blood flow issues? I was told they can test that.

I have had ED/low-libido for about 15 years. I have so many factors that contribute. Heavy drinking/alcoholism, smoking, drug use, life-syle, ADHD, depression.....i may as well join the priesthood because this probably won't ckear up anytime soon....I will be single for a while so it's probably a goid thing

Hi J50,

Don’t worry, I didn’t feel you made light of the situation at all.

I don’t think so as GP’s haven’t pointed me that way. And they haven’t tested blood flow as they don’t suspect it. I’ve been through an Andrologist who again, just gave me viagra.

I feel doctors and specialists are just making light of the situation because I am young. They aren’t taking the impotence seriously at all. Instead of diagnosing they are just attempting to cover the issue.

I will look at seeing a neurologist and an endocrinologist but all of this is down to referrals from my GP because after 2 years I can’t really live with this issue much longer...

Hi wastinglife,

Sorry to hear you’re suffering with ED and low libido.

Have you been diagnosed with a condition linked to your ED?

Have you given up the alcohol and cigarettes? This may help with you condition.
