Weekend drinking withdrawal

Can you get withdrawal symptoms if you have been drinking 2~3 drinks (whiskey) every weekend (Fri, Sat and Sun) since last 15 years? My brother has been doing this since last 15 years and has now stopped drinking completely since last 3 weeks.

I don’t think that he should have withdrawals because he’s not drinking/using every single day. Your body has to have enough alcohol on a daily basis to alter brain activity and chemicals. He may have a psychological type of withdrawal however. Meaning, it obvious that he is dependent on alcohol, just on a different level and when he doesn’t drink as he’s used to it will intensify his moods and thoughts will become obsessions. It’s the addictions seeping out in another fashion in search of the next thing to abuse. (Not necessarily only alcohol or drugs either - not so ironically vanilla milkshakes may creep into his path next)

Thanks. He has got slight anxiety and depression. Could it be due to stopping of drinking ?

It could be many things. A condition that has been there for a while, or perhaps just everyday life.
His drinking is not severe and would full under "safe" levels per the government, so I highly doubt it's withdrawal, especially at 3 weeks clean.

Hi ABCD1234

I believe anyone can gain a dependence on something they take regularly for a long time...but I'm not a Dr - if your brothers concerned about it, I'd see a Dr?

It's impossible for me to say.

It's always equally impossible for you to know just how much he's been drinking. Alcoholics typically under-report the amount they drink, both in frequency and amounts. I know I did, even to doctors.

If he's just drinking what you say, and he's not drinking during the week, his body would have adapted to periods without alcohol.
He would have got well into the habit though and that could cause him psychological withdrawal. His whiskeys probably represent reward and relaxation at the end of the working week, and for a while he'll won't have that. Eventually he's likely to find another outlet. For me it was a pot of tea.
He's presumably stopped of his own accord, which is the best motivator of all.
