Welcome Runner! I'd skip the drinking event, but if you have to go, tell them you've stopped drinking for your health, which is true.

Success!!

Hi all,
Thanks for all the stories and advice. Happy to report that today was a success! I didn't drink and when friends asked why, I said I had things to get done when I got home, and left it at that. They didn't really push back too much. I stuck with coffee and sparkling water, and it felt amazing.
I agree that moving forward, skipping these events that center mainly on drinking is the best idea, especially so early on. But for right now I'm focusing on the success of the day and how great I feel.
Thanks again everyone!!

I'm glad you got over that hurdle, Runner. Good that you felt encouraged instead of resentful.

If they are true friends they wouldn't get upset if you weren't drinking and it sounds like you have true friends. Great job.
