Finally Reached Out For Help
Alcoholism runs deep in my family. My Dad is an all-day drinker, albeit a very successful person. My uncle literally drank himself to death. Suffice it to say, I have grown up in and around alcohol. "Off-Switch" not present in my DNA........
I have been a heavy drinker since my sophomore year in college. Nights in college were complete blackouts. I did graduate and go on to complete law school. I am now 38 years old and still the same type of drinker I was in college only without the blackouts. Daily drinking until I pass out.
My wife and I are now separated with 2 kids. My wife has substance abuse problems of her own with opiates and benzodiazepines. Since our separation, the wheels have come off my drinking. A problem that I did not think could get any worse has gotten COMPLETELY worse. I recently went 6 days without a drop of alcohol, but have for the last 2 nights drank a keg (or so it feels).
Late last night, I reached out to my college roommate who has been sober for 7 years. I finally had the nerve to ask for help. I feel a relief. If only my wife would get help also. #ImReady

Good for you for reaching out! It's not easy to do. I was the same way - heavy drinker in college and thought I was above the term "alcoholic" because I managed to do well somehow. You hit the nail on the head when you said it can always get worse... As long as we keep drinking, it can ALWAYS get worse. It truly is a progressive disease.
Hopefully your friend can offer some support and suggestions. There's no better resource than someone who has been there! Good luck and keep posting - lots of info and love on here :-)

Hello and welcome. As the others have said, good for you for reaching out.
The drink gene is deep in my DNA, too. But, not to fear, it can be overcome.
I drank alcoholically for thirty years. I haven't had a drop in over six years now.
It's like I went to a party and didn't leave for all those years.
But, it progressed as it does in so many of us. Blackouts were common with me, too.
Glad you're here. You'll find a lot of support.
Best to you and your friend, and remember, you never have to drink again.
