A new comer... once again
Good Morning Everyone!
I would like to share my story and find new sober friends and penpals here. I've been struggling with alcohol and drugs for the last 20 years.
I started when I was 15 years old and continued to do so until 35. While I took short breaks from alcohol and party drugs (MDMA and Cocaine) I would always come back. This time I am taking my sobriety seriously and hoping to overcome my alcohol addiction with my willpower and YOUR support.
2 weeks ago I admitted that I am an alcoholic and I have a disease.
I think admitting once alcoholism makes things clearer. Now I know and admit that I have a problem and this problem needs to be fixed.
Here how I stopped 2 weeks ago.
First of all, I did a full medical exam to evaluate the damage alcohol did to my body throughout the years. While it was not as bad as expected, there were some issues directly related to alcohol which can be fatal if I continue to drink. (high blood pressure and ect).On a good side - my BP has decreased within the last two weeks. As you can see, there are some positive results already. Yay!
Although I have been drinking a lot , I am doing ok in my professional life. Thus, I am looking forward to watch my career development without alcohol in my life.
Now i have a lot freetime and I am looking for your advice what worked for you in your initial stages of recovery...
Thanks a lot!!!
I made a decision to stay.

Welcome To SR.
Initial stages: Rest, drink plenty of fluids, stay close to a support group (ongoing), offer support to others, structure your time around non drinking events, stay vigilant. Create a life that is nurturing and respected.
Continuing stages: All of the above
At least this is what I found to be helpful in sobriety. Its unfortunate that I keep learning this the hard way, but in hindsight, this is what was successful for me.

I'm glad you've decided to stop drinking. I think it's important to have a plan as to how you will stop drinking and remain sober. Here are some ideas:

Hi Mizzuno,
Thanks for the insights. I really appreciate them. It is good to understand that there are a lot of us who were able to overcome the addiction. Your support and ideas are valuable.

A lot of physical exercise. I started playing tennis again, now play 3 - 4 times a week. It's good for you body, helps with stress and anxiety, and I got to meet a bunch of people who tend to take care of them selves physically. Good role models for me.
