How to find out the underlying issue of why we drink.

I read a quote on here by another member and I thought it was appropriate for me anyways:
"When it became clear that I could continue to drink and live 2 or 3 more years or quit and live 2 or 3 more decades the choice became clear. "
"When it became clear that I could continue to drink and live 2 or 3 more years or quit and live 2 or 3 more decades the choice became clear. "
I never asked myself the question: why do I drink?
But over the course of decades I often asked myself: why can't I stop?
And until I stopped drinking and found other alcoholics who shared their experience, I didn't know that my decades-old question was the one question all alcoholics ask themselves.

You can phrase it why do we drink or why do we choose to drink or why do we follow through on our impulses to partake in alcohol, however you phrase it, it's the same question.
