FWIW, when I went into rehab, I stopped drinking 36 hours before. I wanted to be alert and didn't want to waste anyone's time or start out in the drunk tank. I took a calculated risk in that the really bad withdrawal symptoms usually don't happen on the first day. I did ask my wife to keep an eye on me though.

Which means I can not "recommend" it, we are all different, but I certainly don't regret doing it, as it somehow helped in making it clear to the staff that I was serious when I said I was done with drinking.
