Thanks to SR and it's members for averting a disaster

So much useful info on this board.

I am making a bunch of whoopie pies for my home group's 41st celebration. I remembered that there are foods that contain alcohol that we might not be aware of. Some people are bothered by it, some not but I was surprised to see a chart that someone posted showing that alcohol doesn't cook off as much as you think.

I remembered that vanilla often has alcohol and is used in the recipe. I go and check my bottle. 35%!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have not even thought to check this were it not for discussion on this board. That's the last thing I would want right now, feeding all these people whoopie pies at an AA meeting that contain alcohol.

Some people don't care, some do, not my choice to make but wow. That wouldn't have ended well.

Oh, and for the record, extract is what contains alcohol, if you look for vanilla flavoring it doesn't but always be sure to check the label if this concerns you or you're cooking for others who may care.

I'm thankful for every little corner of this board!

But we're talking a tsp, maybe 2 of extract. Do people seriously care about that?

Sugar bear, that's a great idea, storing for next time.

Frickaflip, some do. It's a personal choice. For me as long as I'm not tipping a bottle to my mouth with alcohol there's no issue. However, you'd never get me to eat something where the alcohol could be tasted. I never enjoyed that anyway.

Where I have no idea what preferences there are I'm going with its better to be cautious.

I actually drank vanilla extract for the alcohol content. I would care.

Thanks for the post, and good on you for looking out for yourself and the other members of your group before cooking, Ladyblue.

Yes. Some people do. Including me. Like Delilah, I've specifically drank vanilla extract for the buzz before, so I don't want it anywhere near me today.

I never knew vanilla extract had that much alcohol in it. I usually put like 4-5 times the recipe amount when I bake, but that's because I think the vanilla gives it a better taste. Interesting to know.
