Yes Hawkeye I know that 100% - it's not an environment I would feel remotely comfortable in at all - glad to say after discussing it properly my wife is happy to change plans and understands that it's a bad idea so we have today cancelled the hotels - lost £300 deposit but that's a small price to pay and booked a smart apartment overlooking a marina and in a great location - can take it as easy as we like and still have a great time like home from home at our own pace - really looking forward to a real family holiday - we've done plenty but if I'm truly honest they've only been about drinking for far too long, pretty sad really - excited about spending real quality time with the wife and daughter.
