Congratulations Melinda! Great post.
My family knew I quit drinking and so did a couple of normie friends but I didn't really share the non drinking thing with anyone until lately. Before the holidays people were talking about drinking, going out, etc. etc. I merely said "I don't drink" and left it at that. When one person seemed surprised I just added "been there, done that." Nothing further was said.
What I've noticed along the way is that people who have the biggest problem with someone who doesn't drink are the people who already have a troubled relationship with alcohol. People who don't have trouble with alcohol really don't care if we drink or not.

congratulations, Melinda!
and much like you, i had no intention of ever opening my mouth about it at work, and then after a couple of years a couple of things just happened a couple of times and i told a couple of people.
it's amazing relief how what seemed such an etched-in-stone "no" ended up not mattering when i'd reached some solidity and the shame had gone.
looking forward to reading more posts as you move along

Great post!!! Congratulations on 18 months. I love following your story, as others have said.
I have had a few of the experiences you describe (though at work, it's not a big deal if people know that I am an alcoholic, "For real")....I understand what you mean about it feeling....normal....as we are more and more comfortable in our lives.
Happy New Year to you!
