sober new year resolution!
sober new year resolution!
To all of you who want to make getting sober a "new year's resolution", don't wait till the 'new year'.
How many times in the past have you woken up with a hangover and said this will be the last time? And how many of those times did you drink the same day? Or soon thereafter?
Waking up with a hangover and declaring, "This is the last time" has rarely worked for anyone.
Why not END the year sober? Then wake up feeling pretty good and declaring, I like this feeling, I'm gonna keep it?
Making these decisions when we are 'sick' seem to never hold.
Make the decision to quit for good while you have a clear head.
If you are thinking about tying one on 'one last time' you are only kidding yourself.
End the year on an up. Quit before the new year. Get a head start!
Apologies to those in time zones ahead of us in USA Eastern time.
For those here in the Americas, think about it. Many people get into trouble or injured on new year's eve, or worse.
Don't wait till tomorrow.
Take control of your life TODAY.
And seriously, how many new year's resolutions do we ever really stick with?

Here Here Mr. LB! I agree!
Sober living is possible for everyone who wants it.
Have a great new sober year!!! Lots of hope for me this new year. Making changes I have long waited to do. So happy.

You have to be sober more than you want to drink. And that means avoiding situations that you will be unable to control yourself. And especially where other people EXPECT you to drink.
Very many of us have not gone to parties or celebrations when they were trying to get sober.
Stay home and celebrate yourself.
How about a roll call of people who missed parties because they would rather be sober. I know I did.
Everyone who missed a party or event because staying sober was more important to them, post a response saying, "ME!"
ME!

ME!
And I'm still working toward sobriety. But back in the day, I loved to go to functions or hang out with people who enabled excessive drinking. It was like a hall pass to not even try to be sober.
Now, I avoid things that could worsen my addiction. I recently stopped dating a fellow because he wanted to introduce me to hard drugs. I declined, but he'd use around me all the time. So, I decided he wasn't going to be good for me.

I used to work in the bar industry. NYE there would always be two cops right across the street. Easy pickins', really. Fish in a barrel.
So, I don't like parties. Even when I was drinking I didn't like parties. I always wanted to drink way more than was really acceptable, and people were too quiet and well-behaved. Put me in a room where there's alcohol and I want to be the center attraction. So not attractive.
I don't miss parties. I don't miss bars. I don't miss alcohol. I'm just glad to be here with all of you who have chosen to change.
My thought-for-the-day calendar says today, "Just for today, I will pray for peace on earth."
...and let it begin with me. The peace and contentment I now feel gets passed along - instead of the anxiety and short-tempered me of the past.

I was around too much alcohol over the holidays...kept my sobriety, but I didn't always spend the time the way I wanted to. So, tonight- NYE, no alcohol around at all because not only is my sobriety the most important thing, I want to enjoy and celebrate my sobriety tonight without the added stress of others drinking around me!

Bravo Brain and bump! Love what you said. I've taken a pass on New Year's Eve parties for years. When I was drinking I hated going because I didn't want to get blasted in public, I hate loud crowds and I don't like the drunken drama of NYE. Sober, I have no reason to go getting involved in someone else's drunken drama. It's so artificial. It's not fun for me. Wasn't fun before, either.
I'm looking forward to a quiet evening at home, waking up hangover free tomorrow, attending a morning AA meeting and seeing friendly faces, making a pot of soup and baking. I'd be lucky to even get up when I was still drinking. Sober is better.

Tomorrow, I will wake up with no guilt, pain, dehydration, retching, rapid heart beat or screaming anxiety.
Tonight I won't drink 100$ worth of booze, ignore the food, shout over anyone else's shouting, decide whether I'm "good" to drive, or go to the bathroom 47 times.
I'm ok with that. I might even have breakfast tomorrow. -LOL!
