My friend
Oh, God! I know what you mean. I had to let my sweet 15 year old kitty go in August of 2014 and I held her while they injected her and she gave an audible sigh, with her tiny sweet voice. I fell apart right there and then.
I am so sorry for your loss. Having lost many furry friends along the years, I know how you're feeling.
“We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.”

Do you mean, why do we keep connecting to creatures with such short lifespans? I do it because my life is not complete without furry kids to love and care for. When one of my critters dies, I get another one, to give the same good life to another furbaby as I gave to the one who died. To honor them by giving a good life to a needy animal.
Even with all the pain, I would still live no other way. I need animals in my life. I need to have someone to care for, someone who needs me.

I am so sorry for your loss, Adenough. I went through the same thing a couple of years ago with my cats, who I had from the time they were tiny kittens until 17+ years of age.
Like Least said, it is important to keep on loving and caring for others (humans and animals) for us to feel complete in this life. I now have two young, healthy cats that I hope will be with me for a long time yet.

Adenough, I am a pet owner too. I know you must be in utter anguish. I want to thank you for sharing with us. And I think Least's and others' replies are wise and very helpful, because I don't know how I'll handle it when I lose one of my dogs. I can only imagine I won't handle it well at all. It is so hard to let them go.
But, please realize you gave your animal a great life. You cared for it. Many animals don't have that, and I wish we could love and save them all, you know?
It makes me think it's not futile or in vain to take on another animal, though it's no doubt going to break our hearts eventually, because that is one more animal in this world who will be treated well and given a chance in life.
Here's to all the animal lovers.

Adenough, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm starting to tear up just thinking about it... please know that you gave your friend a wonderful life. My best buddy is 10 now and I just can't think of losing him just yet.
