Over It! Please Help

First off, I must say, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Secondly, here is my story:

I have been drinking a small bottle 750 ML a night for the last 10 years. The last year, I have upgraded to a Magnum a night.

In the last 2 months, I am not remembering the night before!
I am not ready to do the complete AA , yet. But I cannot continue this way.

I have to say my sister has inspired me. She was drinking as I was and she got over it . Long story short, she went into the ER and they got her with a wonderful DR of Psychiatry (sorry for the spelling) and he took her off Xanax as I am on as well. He gave her Valium to help with withdrawels and sent her to sike care.

I am not there yet. I would love to taper off. She had no withdrawel symptoms, however I am afraid I will.

Could someone please help give me tips on tapering off.
My mom cannot handle 2 daughters in detox!

I must also say that I take Xanax as she did. He took her off Xanax and put her on Valuim to taper off.

Any ideas that can help me taper without going nuts!
Greatly appreciated.

Don't hesitate with your plans to get sober. Your mom will be so proud to have her children safe from drugs and alcohol! Maybe check out the doctor your sister uses? You can do this!!!

Thank You JK! Any other ideas how I can handle this on my own for now? The reason I ask is because my sister lives in another state....

I would not suggest handling any of this alone. I did, and I now know I really took a chance. Your dr can be your best friend right now. Good luck.

Welcome to SR, tryn2rson; glad you found us.

I don't have any tapering experience or advice. I have read the stories of a handful of SR members who tapered successfully but the majority of tapering stories I've read were unsuccessful. Most have found attempts at tapering to be similar to attempts at moderation.

Attempts at moderation - now that's something with which I am familiar; all attempts were complete failures for me.

I would suggest starting with your doctor to discuss your drinking and your plans to stop.

There are some great links here regarding plans for sobriety.

I will post them in a minute.

SR is a fabulous place for support, understanding and encouragement and, for many, their sole source of support. The key is finding what works for you.

SR is here for you.

I am not a Dr. But I would think that since you are working closely with them, that "cold turkey" would probably be more effective. Everyone is different when it comes to detox and withdrawals. But the meds should help as well. Alcohol detox sucks and withdrawal does as well, but you only have to do it once! Again. .. be careful since it is dangerous. Stay close to your dr. Welcome to the family!

Definitely talk to your doc. Unless you have tremendous will power I can't see how tapering would work. Way too easy say f it halfway thru.

Everyone is different, and guessing on how to taper or following a regimen prescribed for someone else may not be the best for you. Please go see your doctor. The visit won't be nearly as bad as you think, and it will get you on the right path to changing your life for the better.

Why do you think tapering is the way you want to go? Detox with medical help (like Valium or other detox drugs) is much easier, safer, and more effective.

Welcome to the site - there is a way out, your sister can be your best ally right now.

There's no way to know. That's why it's important to talk with your doc.

A medically supervised detox is your best option, tryn2rson.

We are not doctors here and can't give medical advice. There's no way to know what will happen, which is why the majority here are suggesting you see your doctor. I got wheeled into detox on a stretcher myself thanks to years and years of drinking. I am pretty sure a "taper" for those of us who are addicted would not be very effective. Might work for an amateur, but we professional drinkers usually need some assistance at a higher level. In my opinion, the best way to get the monkey off your back is to talk to a doctor. Come clean. Tell her/him exactly what's going on, and that you want to stop. It's pretty scary and not the answer you wanted - we know because we've been there. But you'll be happy you did.

Taking action is the only way to get back on the right track. This kind of stuff doesn't just go away in a week or 2 by drinking less booze than you normally do. Wish it were different, but if we can do it, you can do it. Good luck and welcome.

Welcome

I'm not trying to scare you, but detox can be ok for some and very risky for others. There's no way to know which group you're in ahead of time.

Tapering never worked for me cos I drank every drop I had right away.

I had a very bad last detox - why not see a Dr and be sure of avoiding a bad outcome?

D

Yes, detoxing from alcohol is risky and no one can predict the outcome for you.

I hope that you talk to your dr.

I would like to Thank Everyone for there kind words. It means so much more than you know. I know I was a little crazy last night with all the questions.

You are right, tapering will not work. I will go see my Dr when my Insurance kicks in December 28th.

Thank you all! Getting it out was the hard part for me.

I will keep you posted unless I decide to detox and stay for 30 days.

Best to all!
