Hello hello hello how low?
There are many paths to recovery and many of us here do not use AA. Take a look around and read and see what you think will work for you. Counselling is a good step in recovery.

You can do it Skin and Bones.
I am only on day 6, so obviously no expert, but I've learned from reading all my SR friends posts that it is possible to not drink. You need to stay close to SR and post and read and let these good folks help you on your journey. They are an amazing group that will support you, no matter what. We all (or me anyway) slip up, but there is no judgement here just compassion and sound advice.
Hang in there...we are all here for you.
Best of luck to you,
Ring

Hi SkinandBones, I think many of us drink to numb ourselves or to escape. I certainly did. Breaking the cycle is the hard part. It's like trying to cut through a logging chain using a butter knife. Very difficult but can be done. Rootin' for ya.
Welcome! Way to go on seeing a shrink. I have been going and it helps a lot.
I used to drink for fun, then drank to drown my feelings. I had to learn the hard way that I couldn't drink the problems away. In fact, they grew larger the longer I avoided/drowned them. Which of course required more alcohol. Then came rebound depression and anxiety when I was sober and before long I was drinking all day every day.
Now I'm free. And extremely grateful. Yeah, like still throws curve balls but now I'm dealing with them head on. That's the ONLY way they go away. I'm less than 2 months sober and now my worst days are better than my best days as a drunk.
I've learned that life is not static. We are either climbing or we are falling. The choice is ours.
I was really surprised at how fast I was climbing after I stopped drinking. Even after years of abuse.
You are absolutely making the right choice.

Welcome to SR, you will find lots of support on here. I am only on day 27 today, but feeling better each day. I had three months a while back, and slowly found myself back to daily drinking again. It is t easy, but the mornings are a lot nicer than when I was drinking.

Hey skin and Bones welcome to sr . Anxiety is some thing I still struggle with although I have tools now and it comes and goes at times. I am glad to hear you are in counseling . Would online meetings interest you? I know aa and smart recovery both have online meetings and I am sure other programs have similar things available
Hope you find a plan that works for you and hope to hear updates! Remember, to be gentle and kind to yourself especially in these early days . Best of luck!
