Last night (thanks SR)
Hi SR,
I spent time with a friend that was in a pretty bad place last night. He is going through some tough personal stuff and was drinking one of my favorite whiskeys. I took a few deep smells from his glass and thought briefly if I could have a few sips and be okay. But then was reminded of so many stories of people from here that did that same thing, opened those doors and couldn't stop. So, I quickly decided no. I also thought about how a few sips, or even a decent buzz, wouldn't be worth how I would feel the next day. Not even hangover stuff.. I mean losing all sober momentum. I feel different now, stronger. I can say I wouldn't have made the decision to abstain if it wasn't for these forums. That oaken smell was nice but I prefer a stronger stance in my life. There is too much to do, I know being sober I will go far in life. Even if it's not reflected in my bank account.. my mind, body and soul will be rich!!!
Much Love SR!! Thanks

We were talking about making good decisions, pertaining to his personal issues, and by not drinking I became an example of the main points that I was making. He knew that I was thinking about it and chose not to drink. I didn't realize that until now but if I would have drank with him then it would have been much easier for him to ignore our conversations in these coming days.
Thanks Dee and SR Family!
I appreciate your words

Well done and an inspiring post! Folks in this thread have made a great point about being there for your friend. I think early in sobriety some of us wonder if we'll lose friends if we stop drinking. We probably will lose some. But as your story suggests, we can be such better friends to those who remain in our lives, and probably able to build new and lasting friendships that are deeper and more meaningful.
