True presence
True presence
Just wanted to share a happy observation.
I met up with a friend last night after she'd had some upsetting news about her mum. Rightly or wrongly, we met in a bar. I drank soft drinks all evening and she drank alcohol. I listened to her and offered sympathy, and tried to make her feel supported.
The thing is, because I wasn't drinking I was able to truly listen, to really hear what she was saying. When drinking, that never happens. I feel pleased and proud that I was able to really BE THERE for her. I also noticed that other people there, people I have known for a long time, were responding to me in a much more positive way. I felt confident, and present. Finally I had to head home but my friend stayed. I would've stayed too if I'd been drinking.
Today I feel tired (ongoing sleeping problems ) but I am NOT hungover. I know after I left she would've had a bunch more drinks, and substances as well, and that today she'll be feeling ropey, which is a shame. But at least, because I'm sober, I was able to be there for her.
