Rehab in New England area | Desperate right now
Hi All,
I could use some advice, preferably from those in the New England/New York area. I'm having lots of trouble with relapsing recently. My work/personal life is getting more out of control the more I drink, but I just can't deal with the physical and mental withdrawal. I'm at a point where I'm getting the shakes and frequent panic attacks. I know I'm making the problem much worse by continuing to drink, but I'm terrified I'll have a seizure at this point. I need a detox. I've never been before, and I'm terrified of what it's like. I live in the Boston area. So, I'm lucky to have many options around me, but I just don't know how to do it. My psychiatrist recommended that I go to the ER and tell them I'm an alcoholic having physical withdrawal, and they'll be able to get me to one. I'm so distraught right now. Can someone who's been in my situation before offer some advice? Thanks.

Going to the ER as your psychologist recommended would certainly be an option, or you could call your physician to see if they have recommendations or a referral.
You are making a good decision by doing this. I had horrible anxiety and panic towards the end of my drinking too, getting sober really helped a lot.

Rehab and Detox are different things. Detox comes first and typically lasts 3-7 days. Rehab is typically 28 days at a minimum and many rehabs won't even take you if you haven't detoxed first.
So the ER is the place to start to get detoxed. That's what I did (4 days) then I went to AA, no rehab. Rehab is great if you can do it, it just wasn't possible in my case.
