My ex broke up with me when I was in intensive care after a rough bout with the DTs. I went to rehab thinking I still had a chance. But the counselor wisely told me to just let her go and concentrate on myself.
Over the following year, I learned a lot of things about myself. I realized I had a pattern of seeking validation through other people via relationships rather than learning to love myself. But must importantly, I learned how to stay sober.
That time alone gave me a lot of time to come to the conclusion that I ruined the prior relationship with my drinking to the point of beyond repair. And that's ok. I'm not that person anymore. I don't hurt people the way I used to.
I started dating someone new around a year sober and we're still going strong. She has never seen that person my ex despised so much. And I've learned how to be both a better boyfriend and and a better person in general.
So I pass on the suggestion my counselor gave me way back in rehab. Just concentrate on yourself. The rest will fall into place if you stay sober. I promise
