New and looking for guidance

Well I think I've at long last come to the conclusion that I have a problem.

I don't drink daily. When I do drink I generally don't do anything too stupid.

I am generally a happy silly drunk with my friends. But I find myself more and more frequently going for a few beers on my own after work. It's affecting my work and social life and I want to stop.

I'm not sure about triggers so if any mods want to edit, fire away.

Anyway, I just poured half a bottle of wine down the sink and made myself some tea.

As I said in the OP I don't drink every day, and when I do I don't really lose control. But i feel like it's encroaching and I can see the way it's going. I've recently realised that I have older relatives who are (were) functioning alcoholics.

I am too old for this and I want to knock it on the head. But I think I need a bit if support to do it.

A great place to go for support and a bond of camaraderie is the current month's join thread, "Class of July 2014".

Have you tried quitting, or taking a break?

Bigwhoop, i started out as a funny drunk too. Only drank with friends on weekends. Then slowly progressed to once or twice a week after work to buying beer and drinking it home everyday of the week. Eventually, I was unemployed and drinking vodka all day, everyday.
Alcoholism is progressive. Not saying you will end like me, but it is a slippery slope.

Depends what you mean by "break". I will happily go days or even weeks sober but once I have one I'll have five.

I think I am a good way off that, but I think you're right and it's time to nip it in the bud before it goes any further.

Wish I knew bout this place & moreso aa before destructive living took a turn for the worst. You haven't, according to post, done anything too stupid...& I would add YET. It's the "yets" that do us in later. Hang around here often, daily if possible & be encouraged. Attend a mtg & c if its for you or not
Best wishes man

I wish I would have quit when my sneaking suspicions were rising in me like they are in you now.

This is a great place for support. I have learned I can't do it alone. It has really helped me to know I'm not the only one struggling to quit.

Welcome!

Hello Bigwhoop,
You've reached a very wise verdict!
Wish I'd quit a couple decades ago.
Starts out as fun, then as the years
pass, those "five" turn into ten+ or
a 1.75L handle. The consequences get
more and more atrocious, in every facet.
Good move coming here!
