Nervous about AA meeting
I'm going to my first one in this new area (since i've moved since my fiancee and I split this weekend). I'm going with a friend but I"m nervous
I went to them in treatment (mandatory) but haven't been really going to them here .....
Any words of advice?

Lawgirl, I went to my first meeting last week and I was TERRIFIED. There were so many thoughts running through my head like "Will I be able to find it okay?" or "What if I get there late?" or "what am I supposed to do/how am I supposed to act?". But everyone was very nice and welcoming, I got some phone numbers of other women, and I have been going to a meeting at least once a day since. To be honest, the first meeting I went to wasn't a great fit for me, but I went to a bunch of different meetings, and I have now found one that I really like. My advice would be to go and listen with an open mind. And don't be embarrassed if you cry. I cried several times in my first meeting, and the only thing that happened was that lots of nice strangers gave me hugs, advice and encouragement.

I hadn't looked up where the meeting was and it turned out to be in a very hardcore area of town in a homeless shelter. Everyone at the meeting was heavily tattooed, homeless, and male lol. I still went and got my chip. Nice people but that's not going to be my home group, just because a bit hard to relate as a 31 year old professional woman....might try a woman's group!
AA meetings are the only place I feel totally safe and can let my guard down. I love the feeling of being surrounded by people who know what it is like to be me. As a matter of fact I just got back from one and will be at another one tomorrow
Good for you lawgirl! I would definitely try a women's group. Another option is to look for a "young person's" meeting. I myself am 33, but still consider myself young, lol. I found a great home group that is for younger people, although I would say the vast majority of the people there are between the ages of 27 and 40. I guess for me, I just felt like a meeting with nothing but "old timers" (nothing against you old timers!) didn't resonate with me. Definitely try another meeting, you will find one that fits!
