I did read some of the forum stuff on here for talking to your boss. Some people say yes and others say don't talk to him. I've never been disciplined for anything alcohol related or bad job performance due to alcohol. So I'm wondering if he can discipline me for telling him I have an alcohol problem? I told him I was starting counseling tomorrow. He shook my hand and said he supported me. He also said if I needed anything to let him know. Including calling him at 2am if I needed help with anything.

Are you in USA? If you are and you are in recovery and NOT drinking/using, you are covered under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act covers those with an addiction/alcoholism and who are NOT currently active in their problem).

Your prior performance reviews haven't reflected anything poor, so breathe easy and keep moving forward!!!
