1st Post by a 50 year Drunk

Howdy folks. Jack here. 21 days sober after a 50 year drunk. Feels pretty good.
I come from a long line of drinkers. My Mom and Pop were heavy drinkers. Along with all my Aunts and Uncles. Grew up in the culture. Never missed a day of work in my 67 year life but had some rough mornings getting there. Over the last couple years I slowly worked my way up to a number of shots with my 5 or 10 beers a day. However, I crash stopped at rock bottom just 21 days ago. Looked in the mirror and saw my Dad looking back. I was (am) sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

First few days were a little rough but it’s getting better. Did do 2 year of sobriety a few decades ago. So I know about the pitfall of thinking I can “handle a drink now”.

Yesterday morning I had a little dizzy spell and was hacking around the net when I found ya'll. Gonna see the Doc this week and come clean with him. So here I am. Thought I'd jump in. Glad I found my way here to the forum.

All I got to do is get thru 4 pm each day. ;-) Jack

I deeply honor and admire your attitude.

See, my dad was a heavy drinker. He too never missed a days work. But unlike you, he never was able to stop drinking. I remember one time, one really honest moment of him saying "son, how I wish I could quit". Alcohol made him be two people, he was very violent and sadistic when drunk. He destroyed his life and nearly mine too. He died at 57 from esophagus cancer, died in a pool of his own blood.

Sorry to tell this sad story here, I am emotive these days. I'm really glad you are changing your life for the very best. I wish you all the strenght in the world. Congratulations on deciding seeing a doctor and face the reality. You are an example for me.

That there is the many thing that has me motivated. My throat is raw from the last year of drinking.

Welcome Jack! I'm here after >30 yrs of drinking. I started at in my teens too and also have a family member who is a "functioning alcoholic". I've always went to work and coworkers would be very surprised if they knew how much and how often I drank. I applaud you for quitting and hope to hear more about your journey.

Jack - my favourite name of all

Welcome mate.. I come from a total drinking culture and Irish/English/Swedish background (2nd generation Australian) but I really think we can avoid our heritage by

How true. This last year I became aware that I have gotten to the point of "I don't care what they think." I think that's when my real problems started. That scared me.

Congratulations on your 21 days. That's 3 weeks! Your comment about not caring anymore about what people think. That's right were I quit when I realized that. Almost like there is nothing to stop you then.
