Day 12 - I Feel Great
After 20 years of daily, heavy drinking and an all-time 2 day record of sobriety, I'm happy to announce that I'm on day 12 and still going strong. I'm just going day by day right now, and the days are great. I already feel like a new person and it keeps me going. Besides for the obvious benefits of quitting such as being healthier and having a significant increase in the quality of life, I have another motivator. I have lost 7 pounds in the past 12 days. Although that might not seem healthy, keep in mind I've gained 75 over the years from drinking. I would start drinking in the morning, and when I was done at night, I would binge eat everything I could find and then immediately pass out for the night. On my hangover days, I would lay on the couch and eat all day thousands of calories (speaking of hangovers, wow it's great not having those anymore). I have the appetite of a normal person right now and I am eating healthy. The redness of my face is completely gone. The bags under my eyes are gone, and the black circles are fading. A friend of mine who didn't know I quit drinking said to me yesterday, "You look really different. What is it?", and I told her I gave up the booze. She is very proud of me as am I. I just want everyone who is in their first week of sobriety for the first time to know that they can do this. The first week was really rough, I mean bad, but it is so worth it. You can do this. I'm not cured by any means, and have a long road ahead of me, but the hardest part is over and I feel amazing right now. I'm not going back to that dark, ugly, depressing place, ever.
