Advice for anxiety

I've only been here less than a week, so I know I'm the last person who should be giving advice....just wanted to share something that helped me with my feelings of being overwhelmed and hopeless.
I like to read and a book I'd been waiting for finally came in at the library. So, I started to read. At the end of every chapter, I got up and did 5 chores. Some took less than a minute, some took a bit longer, but after I finished 5 chores, I got to go back to my book. While the house wasn't spotless, it no longer looked like something out of hoarders, which actually did a lot to help me feel less overwhelmed. Funny how something as simple as a clean counter can make someone feel better about life.
In the past, I'd make lists. In college, during finals, my lists would start with "Get out of bed" and "Take a shower". That way, I felt good about having crossed some things off my list. I need to get back to doing that. Until I stopped drinking, even list making seemed like too much work.
I hope this helps someone.
Have a great day!

I like your plan and I do the same thing myself. I can get overwhelmed if I let things go and it will really bother me, so I try to keep doing small things all the time.

And, list-making is a great way to feel like you're accomplishing things.

That really made me smile, Shoshi I remember when work was overwhelming me, I included things like 'turn on computer' 'turn on printer' on my list - sometimes they were the only things I crossed off!

But it sounds like you're doing great

When my house is a mess and I am turning around in circles not sure where to start, I discovered that if I put on my Ipod with music or a podcast I liked it distracts me and I am able to calmly attack the house!

That's an excellent idea Shoshi I am terrible for feeling overwhelmed and not doing anything but if I can tie it in with something I enjoy maybe I'll actually get something done! Now got any advice for the anxiety tying knots in my stomach...? x

I especially like your idea of putting the book down until you accomplish five concrete things, and only then picking it back up again.
