Addiction vesus "real" illness in Slate
Hi Guys,
Hope everyone is well. Sorry I have been off for the past week, I have been traveling for work and internet access has been spotty or non-existent.
All is well and I will (fingers crossed!) have internet access from here on out so will be reading and catching up today. I missed you all!
A friend sent me this article that recently appeared in Slate. I thought it was beautiful. Beautifully written and beautiful in its truth about how mental illness and addictions are treated so differently by society than "traditional" illness.
Sorry for the repeat if anyone has posted this before but thought it was too good not to share.
Lots of love to everyone and more soon!
Families dealing with mental illness need support, too.

F*ck! I don't know if hard lump in my throat is causing the tears behind my eyes, or if it's the other way around, but that was a poignant and painful read. And all true. Addiction is a real deal struggle for many of us, complete with all its tragedy and heartbreak. No other 'affliction' quite so effectively drives the compassion and sympathy out of our loved ones. And it probably doesn't matter all that much what we call it or how we classify it, only that we understand that these are real people feeling real pain, who would probably choose otherwise for themselves and their families if only they could.
Best of luck to you all.
