Hi onthebrink, I was in the position where I wanted to quit on my own too. When I first tried cold turkey, I began to hyperventilate. I had drunk for years. I decided to taper down to lessen the severity of the withdrawals. I drank one less beer every few days. Alternating sips with sugary weak kool-aid and water. After 30 days of this, I got down to the last beer. And stopped. I was able to function in regular life during this process. My withdrawals were severe. Full body spasms, auditory hallucinations and soaking sweats. I layed in my bed tossing around for 3 days. I had people standing by to take me to the hospital. I did manage to make it thru. That is why I say taper first. The tapering allowed me to do it. I definitely consider quitting on my own the hard way. It did work for me and I never want to go thru that again.
