Today is day 1

I've never really thought that I had a problem until this morning. Over the past week I've blacked out twice and today I called into work because I drank too much last night. I'm 23 and I have a high pressure job so as soon as I have one drink I can't stop. I'm vowing today to never drink alcohol again. It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that all of my friends can casually drink and it doesn't affect other aspects of their lives while I can't do that. When I drink its always too much and it always leaves me with guilt and regret. Today, I'm done with it. I'm taking control of my life. It's going to be hard, but I'm excited to be free of those negative feelings. Hopefully this site helps

Hello, and welcome.

I'm with you. I could never stop at one either. It always baffled me how my friends and others could drink normaly without get **** faced drunk, like I did.
Blackouts, lost days at work and the misery and anxiety of the next day.

I lived like that for thirty years. You're young, you've got your whole life in front of you so it's great that you realize you have a problem now. Wish I would have been as wise as you.

I've been sober two years nine months now and it all started when I realized if I didn't take that first drink I couldn't get drunk. Simple.

I wish you the best and I hope you keep posting here. Many of us haved been given a repreive form drink. You can do it, too.

Best to you.

Welcome to SR.

Find a healthy way to deal with the stress of your high pressure job. But in the long run, it has less to do about stress and everything to do with alcohol. So I hope you find a way to deal with life without drinking.

Hey smiles, welcome to SR.

Get in there my son (in England that means "well done & go for it"). You'll find plenty of us know what you're facing so let's see another post from you tomorrow saying "day 2".

Welcome ILoveSmiles! I'm 28 and it's taken me until now to fully realise what you've realised. Missed days of work, embarrassment, anxiety, blackouts. It's not worth it! All the best with your recovery

Welcome! You are ahead of me by about 12 years. Stay with it, and don't let doubt creep in.

Welcome. One thing you said stood out to me:

I'm 23 and I have a high pressure job so as soon as I have one drink I can't stop.
Lots of people have high pressure jobs and handle alcohol without issues. We don't drink like this because of our jobs. We drink like this because we are alcoholics.

I would agree with Carl on this one. Some of us are not equipped to handle alcohol. We do not have the "off" switch that keeps us from getting drunk. Life is high pressured at times and work can be the same. We have to find better ways to deal with them. Keep posting and sharing. This site has helped me immensely.

Welcome and it's my Day 1 as well, so I am totally with you on this!

Take it from me, I have tried it all, and look I am back here on SR because my "field research" as they say has proven that, ahem, I sure like drink 2 and 3 as soon as drink one has hit my nervous system. And then? It's all downhill from there :-(

Let's do this thing. One day at a time.
