I attempted to get sober three times of my own accord and couldn't manage it. I knew I needed to be sober but I didn't want to be, not badly enough anyway. And my first attempt kept me sober over one year. So it's not that I couldn't get and stay sober... Looking back on it I see I simply didn't have enough education or insight into the direness of my own predicament. I think it helped me very much those times I did get sober for a little while. I think I needed to experience that. I am thankful I had enough insight and desire to even recognize the problem at such a young age.
But I absolutely believe you must want sobriety for it to work. I don't see any other way for an addicted person to get or stay sober. You must prioritize it above everything else.
