The last 3 lines of AA's HOW IT WORKS describes it very well for me .. an alcoholic of my type:
(a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
(b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism.
(c) That God could and would if He were sought.
HOW IT WORKS also states "If you have decided that you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it - then you are ready to take certain steps."
You just have to come to the decision.
All the best.

This is my experience with it. Surrender for me was admitting that i couldn't control the alcohol no matter how much I tried. That I had a choice in the matter, I could drink or not drink, and ultimately it was up to me to make that choice. It was like a light bulb went off in my head. From there things just flowed for me.
Personal growth is important for me because I had to change ME. I had to change they way I thought of things, the way I did things otherwise I would keep doing the same thing over and over again.
It's not easy by any means, I'm 47 and had to change years and years of behaviour that I had learned. I had to relearn a lot of things. I've had to become less judgemental and more compassionate to others. I also had to realize that I am not perfect and I don't have to have the perfect life or have a life that conforms to what society says I have to. I can be happy and have a simple life and do things that make ME happy.
I have been 8 months sober and I can tell you that I have peace and contentment I NEVER had when I was drinking. I thought I could find it in a bottle, but I was so wrong.
