Attending a party newly sober
I'm newly quit, and I have the idea that alcohol is almost everywhere, so I might as well get used to it. I don't want to live my life trying to avoid triggers, since that would be an impossible task. I figure I'll never be comfortable around alcohol as long as I try to avoid it. However, YMMV.
You don't have to tell anyone you quit drinking. You can just say, "no, thanks." It's nobody else's business.

I went to a concert about a month and a half into sobriety. I went in there brimming with confidence before I went. When I got to the concert, it just plain freaked me out. The smell of alcohol was everywhere. Unfortunately, I was with people and couldn't run from the scene. I made it out w/o drinking, but it wasn't that easy. I also had health issues due to drinking so I really couldn't go back to drinking.
If you do go, you better have a well thought out plan of how you will avoid drinking.

Well today is the day of the party and I chose to stay home. Thank you all for taking the time to give me advice! It means a lot. I may be missing a big get together, but I'm 60 days sober today! That is worth so much more to me

commit to being the designated driver. then when people try to encourage you to drink just one, tell them, 'one isn't any fun, if i drink one, i'll want more, and i have to drive... i'll just wait till i get home'
the cool part about this is that if you are the designated driver, you're not lying.

Hi Kiki,
I decided to avoid going places with alcohol for the first few months. That was part of my sobriety plan and I've no regrets. You can always use some of the money you are saving from not drinking to buy a nice present instead of attending the party.
Look after yourself Kiki.
God bless,
Michael
