Confidence in my Sobriety

I am a believer in my recovery. I just went shopping. Bought a silk dress. I have been living in sweatsuits for 4 years. The first thing I lost when I started drinking was my feminity. Too drunk to care. Hair in a ponytail and sneakers. Mismatched socks if I bothered wearing them at all. So I bought a dress today and it is a commitment to my sobriety. I have lost a little bit of weight but that is not the reason I want to wear a dress. I love being a woman and I love expressing it. I can enjoy looking nice again. A girly girl. I know this may sound dumb but it is a landmark moment in my sobriety.

Congratulations on a new dress, Escapist!

And a great post.

If I'm not mistaken Diane von Furstenberg said: 'Feel like a woman. Wear a dress".

Enjoy your day)

Wonderful! The dress... the buying it, the wearing it, is just an expression of something much deeper.

I would like to suggest, additionally, that you begin to leave out the type of self deprecating language I bolded above. If the sentence simply reads "It is a landmark moment in my sobriety.", it's a better reflection of the strong and wonderful woman you are. Nothing you express is "dumb", so never even suggest that it might be.

ps...you freakin' rock!

Doesnt sound dumb at all!!!
I can totally relate. I lost all of my femininity too...and basic hygiene skills (ick, hard to admit).
One of my resolutions this year is to get a new wardrobe.....it needs updating badly! Good for you.

Now you need to go buy some new shoes, and then plan a night out for yourself!! Yes, I love shoes.

This just might have been the smartest post I've seen here on SR and I'll thank you not to make disparaging remarks about the people I admire.

Absolutely! Go for those benefits of sobriety.

This is where we remind ourselves that we aren't giving something up, we are going for something better.

Thats lovely.

I remember my life when drinking.
I never got dressed at weekends, I just drank in a manky old dressing gown.
Through the week I put in very little effort at work.
The second I was home, back on went the manky old dressing gown and the vodka bottle emerged from the fridge.

Now I like feeling clean.
I like wearing nice clothes.
I like wearing make up.
I like looking at magazines and the internet for fashion tips and make and hair idea's.

I think it is an investment in yourself.
I am happy for you.

How strange, I did something similar today. My hair has been scraped back in a scruffy ponytail like a lank greasy rats tail cut for years, today I had it styled into a trendy choppy bob and I love it!
I bet you will be wearing that silk dress very soon escapist
