aa meetings

when you go to an aa meeting are first names only used or do others share last names as well?

I have never heard anyone identify themselves including their last names, nor have I ever used my last name at a meeting. It is not required or expected.

There are a few folks that say their last names in my area.

You can tell them you're Tipp1103 if you want, it's anonymous group.. Go check it out, you'll feel a lot better after a little hour than you did all day! Promise you that!

I know a few people who add a last name, but they are decidedly in the minority. Most use first names only.

Heh, that sometimes leads to interesting nicknames like "Lollipop Joe" or "Principal Jim" to tell one Joe or Jim from another.

I just posted this link on another thread about What to Expect at Your First AA Meeting. It gives a lot of explanations about how things are "done" at meetings and why.

The key here is no one asks it is not required and no one cares. If someone wants to tell you there is no pressure to reciprocate.
Read the link Lexie posted to you.

Net net, go to an open meeting, tell them it's your first meeting and you're there to listen.. That's it... Listen for a month, 6 months.. I'd suggest going to many different meeting till you find the group you feel comfortable with.. Read about AA on the web, history, big book, 12 steps.. If the program isn't for you no worries.. Choose a different program but get a plan together that works for you!! It's really a personal journey! I just want you to succeed!! I'm no saint, I battle with it every day!

Yeah, mostly first names only here unless by choice. Same here with the funny nicknames-Chef Bob, Tall Robert, etc.
