When I was a preschool teacher they found that kids that were "successful" socially had behaviors that helped them. One of them was "entry" skills. They had learned to bring something to the group to help them enter it (maybe a stuffed toy or the like). This works for adults too. You can bring something to share for the gathering (food, game, anything that fits the occasion). It helps break the ice and starts the conversation.
