Addicted to Benadryl

I'm so glad I found this forum because I could use some support. Recently I have been abusing Benadryl. I'm a recovering alcoholic so I know about addiction. I was wondering if there was anyone else out there with my problem. It seems to be pretty rare.

Hi skston - welcome

I've seen threads about it in our substance abuse forum and elsewhere.

((skston)) - Welcome to SR! Though I wasn't addicted to benadryl, I certainly abused it for a while. I've abused a lot of stuff, but that's one thing I love about SR - doesn't matter the substance, I've always found supportive people here.

Hugs and prayers,

Amy

I've been in recovery for a long time and this has thrown me for a loop. I'm hoping that talking about it will help.

Thanks for your comments.

I don't think it's as rare as you think, but maybe not talked about as much. A very good friend of mine was addicted to Nyquil. No matter the substance, it doesn't have to control you. Glad you are here.

Years ago I abused Nyquil. I think I can get addicted to anything.

Yeah, me too. Now I turn my overzealous nature toward things like my shoe/boot collection and exercising. Those things don't cause me to lose my children, my house, or my job.

still struggling with this, although I have cut down. I started taking Benadryl a while back to fight vertigo problems that were upsetting my stomach and giving me bad headaches. It worked like a charm -- but now I have to stop taking it. My doctor recommended non-drowsy Dramamine which works. I've been taking that and it does the job, now I just have to get rid of the Benadryl!

Also, I changed my username to something less identifiable . . .

I'd say I'm addicted to benadryl. I feel like I have to have it to fall asleep at night...
I've been doing that for 4 years now, never really thought about it since it became such a bad habit. I really should stop.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your addiction.

I've seen this in some of my family members as well. Actually an entire family household.
Like others have said, they took it every night in order to sleep. One member got to where they would chewed them up too which is not really a good sign.
Although we didn't discuss it, I have noticed that the entire family has since stopped so something or someone must have convinced them that it wasn't a good thing.
You are certainly not alone.

I have no idea how much you are taking or anything about the withdrawal it may cause...maybe you should consider speaking to your doctor about it to safely get off?

I think it's pyschologically addictive as opposed to physically addictive. still, I'll think about talking to my doctor. she's familiar with my many issues!

Also, Happier, I cannot imagine chewing Benadryl. Besides being horrible tasting, it seems like it would turn your entire mouth hot pink!
