Well, I contacted my doctor about my Benadryl use. The easy way -- I emailed her. I told her what was going on and explained that I have a problem with what feels like motion sickness -- that's why I started taking it. I'm hoping she can offer an alternative.

I'll keep you posted about how I'm doing. Thanks for the support.

I picked up an RX for meclizine, which my doctor prescribed for when I have motion sickness. Hopefully that will work and I'll be able to stop taking the Benadryl. It might be a long weekend!

Hi Trailrider,

Yes I used to use Benadryl and other meds like benzedrex with any pseudoephedrine or amphetamines in them when I couldnt get speed. This was 37 years ago so not much recent experience, but I know that you are not alone there are many others recovery from over the counter abuse.

Welcome to SR

benedryl abuse

*couldn't edit the header, noticed a typo- misspelled Benadryl :-/ *
I began taking 4-5 Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every morning about a year and a half ago. I don't have the same reaction that you normally hear about it, instead of making me sleepy, it give me energy. Energy at first, rather. I take doses of 4-7 diphenhydramine pills, 5-7 times a day and it eventually starts to to make me jittery, but never sleepy. I know I need to stop because there are times I can literally feel my heart beat as though it's going to jump out of my chest. I have a wonderful life, just always busy, so I take the Benadryl to stay awake and have energy to conquer my whole day. Has anyone else had this, not so common, reaction to diphenhydramine?

I abused benadryl for a while. Decided one day it was another addiction and quit it over about a month. It was way easier than alcohol.
