A question.
A question.
Do I need to hit rock bottom to be considered an alcoholic? All I do is think about drinking, & I get very agitated that I don't have any in the house.. So I don't drink every day, but like I said I'm always thinking about drinking.
Also, later today I'm going to pick up a white chip. Why wait..

Welcome Rebecca. I see that as of this moment you are SR’s newest member. Congrats!
For me, hitting bottom and alcoholic are somewhat different ideas that are not necessarily tied together. A simple definition of an alcoholic is someone who cannot control their drinking while the simple definition of someone who has hit bottom is an individual who has decided to stop digging. A bottom is just a point you decide to change your life.
Here's wishing you well.

Rebecca,
I agree with what Dee is saying. It doesn't have to be an actual event of you hitting a 'rock bottom'. It can just be the time you decide to give up and surrender to the fact you have a problem.

I for one thought I hit rock bottom when I got my first DUI.
Then I thought I hit rock bottom for getting fired for missing too much work due to drinking/hangovers.
Then I thought I hit rock bottom when I got my 2nd DUI.
Then I thought I hit rock bottom when I was living in a ********, unemployed, drunk, depressed, and had suicidal thoughts.
In between all of those events, I picked myself up, got better physically and emotionally, and stopped drinking for a while, until I started again.
Today I'm here because I don't want rock bottom to be death or incarceration.

I don't personally believe in "rock bottoms", but I do believe in a "bottom". Some of us have to hit what is commonly called "rock bottom", others of us don't. The rooms of AA and NA are filled with people of all types, including lots of people who were smart enough to see "rock bottom" was in their future, and decided to stop before they got there. This was their personal bottom.
In AA this is sometimes referred to by saying, "You don't have to hit rock bottom, you can stop digging anytime you are ready".
