an old friend called round last night with a big bottle of vodka and i have to admit i was very tempted , thankfully i declined partly due to willpower but mostly due to the fact i could feel the wifes eyes burning the back of my head , im really proud because i was only on day 3 and you all know what thats like , day 4 now and i feel ok , the wifes happy too , got to admit i was very depressed last night , on the verge of crying actually , my mate walked away with a bemused look on his face , ive never refused a drink from him before , he probably thinks ive gone nuts , ill phone him later and explain , im quite proud of myself today and for the first time in years ive just realised , I CAN DO THIS , thanks for listening

You can do this. You can choose at times to be sober. Then others will feel less like a choice. Either way both scenarios are possible. There are many here to prove it.

Stop worrying about pleasing others ! (aka - having a drink with someone). This seems to be another common alcoholic trait, I know I used to be like that.

You did the right thing, for YOU ! World will go on, and if your friends is upset about you not drinking with him, then is he a true friend or just a drinking buddy ?
