"CLEAN" and sober meaning?

What is the "Clean" in clean and sober meaning? I know when I was drinking that I used to sweat alot and could not have enough showers to get rid of the sweat and unclean smell.Is that what the Clean means?

Some people refer to it to be drug free...Sober to be alcohol free.

clean=drug free as in, if I take a urine test the results are "clean"

For me it's my state of mind. Uncluttered and cleaned out of addictive thoughts and patterns. It's also living honestly. That's clean living for me.
