I count the days because being "normal" is still new to me and I still find it so amazing that I've achieved sobriety. There was a time not that long ago when I couldn't go a single day without a drink. Back then the idea that I might go 10, 20, 50, 100 days without a drink was something beyond my wildest dreams and counting the days continually informs me that I have actually achieved those dreams.
I'm now five months sober and no longer count the actual days. I stopped counting days around the 130 day mark. Now, I count months. Maybe when I get to a year sober, I'll start counting years. At some point, I suppose I'll stop counting, probably when "being normal" feels normal, rather than new and exciting.
