My biggest benefit to living sober
is that I'm alert and aware of my diabetic dog's health. Tonight he had a low sugar episode but thanks to being sober I noticed it early and treated it with Karo syrup. He was right as rain shortly after and then ate his dinner.
I think of the 'bad ol' days' when I was usually either drunk or passed out. Terrible things could have happened as a result of my carelessness. Low sugar can kill a diabetic. It's called 'insulin shock'. He went into seizures once and had to be rushed to the vet. Now I know to treat with Karo syrup, but if needed, I'd be sober to drive to the vet.
That is such a huge thing for me: being able to watch him closely all the time and to be sober to take good care of all of them. I can't think of a better reward for living sober than my healthy happy dogs.
