just realized i'm an alcoholic

I just realized i'm an alcoholic. In the past year I started using alcohol to sleep but never had the urge to drink during the day. Things have been going very badly with my business and I started adding some day time in. Last week I was going to be home alone for 3 days. I basically went on a huge bender. When i came out of it I experianced massive withdrawal symtoms. I never had those before. In a way I'm glad it allowed me to get on the computer and figure out what i was dealing with. Looking back I may have had some symtoms but did'nt identify it as withdrawel. I cut back to my normal level of drinking and was pretty ok the next day. Then I cut my drinking in half. Sure enough the symtoms come back. I realized that many of the axiety ridden days I've had may be because of liquor. In a way it almost makes me feel better. So thats were I am a few days into drinking half. I'm going to see an alcohol councellour this week. I don't have the insurance or money for a doctor but my next step is to cut that amount in half. Just trying to get a handle on how bad the withdrawell will be with me.

Welcome, joebbb! I am glad you are seeing an alcohol counselor later this week. As you probably know from reading posts on here, withdrawal isn't to be taken lightly. You can get really sick from it Happy you are here and taking steps to get help with this.

Hi Joe,

I used alcohol to help me to sleep too, during some stressful times. And, like you, I didn't realize that it was increasing my anxiety and depression too. It's uncanny how alcoholism can slip into your life and before you know it, you're hooked.

I'm glad you are cutting back and I hope that you will continue to read and post.

thank you all. The sleep thing is the most scary. I picture myself being up all night. But this past month or so the alcohol was interupting was really messing up my sleep pattern anyway. So i'm determined that if I do have to stay awake I will.

Joebbb. Sounds like you have a plan. Getting medical or addiction service advice is the way to go.

I am day 14 today. It's much better already.

Welcome Joe

I found the sleep thing sorted itself out eventually - I found the need to sleep eventually trumped any anxiety I had.

Glad you've joined us

Joe!

My alcoholism started with me using it as a sleep aid...and, well, the rest is history...

Glad you found SR...it's a great place to be!
