Day 17 of rehab - Truth time re: relapses

During rehab this week, I was told 2 things about relapses:

1. They are part of recovery; and

2. They are never part of recovery, but we have to forgive them when they occur.

What is the truth?

I select #2.

I think if you are willing to go to any length to maintain your sobriety then relapse is not part of recovery. If you do relapse there are issues that need to be dealt with within yourself.

They are not a part of recovery, they are a sign that recovery is not happening. I don't get what there might be to forgive, it's not a transgression against me if someone else relapses.

I don't think relapses are part of recovery.

However when they occur, we have to forgive ourselves and move on.

I sat thru many meetings witnessing others go
out and try some control drinking to only return
and let me know alcohol is still kicking butt big
time and it hasnt changed.

Im sober today because they went out for me.

For that I can say But For The Grace Of God There
goes I, because that surely could have been me
and can be me if I make a choice to quite working
and living my recovery program.

TODAY I choose to stay grounded in my program
because Im enjoying the Promises they offer to us
as stated in the BB of AA.

Im grateful to be sober today.

maybe it all depends how a person defines recovery.

Relapse is painful, very painful. Once I realized how great sobriety is I am scared to death of a relapse.

Relapse is not part of recovery. If it happens, you learn what you were not doing so that you remained sick. Then move on to recovery.

I don't really care if they are apart of recovery or not. They are apart of life and the journey, learn from it and move on, one way or another you will be put on a path of doom or recovery.

I agree...IMHO...if you relapse you are still having issues with your reasons and thoughts behind the booze. Resources are in place so we take these tools to learn from.
Relapse is the reoccurring thought process that leads up to the re-drinking. It could be days or months beforehand. I feel that if you lead up to drinking you haven't come to peace within yourself and your recovery.
Recovery means to 'get over' to recover, the act of recovery.
Relapse means to regress after partial recovery from illness.
But like I say, that's IMHO.
