This implies to me that he has the power to turn his own will over to God and then go take it back from God. Sounds like ego.
I tried to self will myself into spiritual living. Found out I cannot turn my will over or take it back. If I could, I wouldn't have need to work and rework the steps. Steps 4-9 are how I turn my will and life over to God.
Our basic text only gives one reason that we ever drink again and that is that we were not in fit spiritual condition. Some fabulous tools around that in the 10th step.
