September 11th

Tomorrow is a sad day in my country's history. I plan to honor it by being sober, for those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day, those who live with its memories, and those who have and continue to fight for freedom around the world. Anybody want to join me?

Absolutely!
You know, tomorrow will be my 10th wedding anniversary. This year will be the first year that we will actually celebrate (go to a resort) on this day since our 1st anniversary. It just never seemed right after 2001

I'm glad you're going to get away, it sounds great! I've always silently felt bad for people with birthdays, anniversaries, etc on this kind of infamous day. I think the further we get from it though, the more it becomes a day of celebrating and remembering the heroes and the patriotism, even though we'll never forget the horror.

Thanks for this sober reminder, Colagirl.

I remember that day very vividly - I was 21... headed for a bar after work, right before noon - the only time I did this - and watched those chilling images on TV, in complete disbelief.

May those who lost their lives rest in peace, and may peace find the many, many people affected by the events of that dark day.

I was mid-20s and at a work conference in Seattle. Getting ready for the day I suddenly realized the station I had on was interrupting their programming for something. Thinking something must have happened in Seattle, I called my parents in case they were worried, only to find out about the terrorist attacks. I'll never forget that feeling of complete helplessness, fear, and sadness.

I too will stop and remember on this sad day.

Has anyone else read Charle Sheen's comments on this? About it being an inside job?

Snippet from The Sun:

He claims the attacks served as "the pretext for the dismantling of our Constitution and Bill of Rights" and to justify war on Iraq.

He also hints that Osama bin Laden works for the US government.

What a jerk.

Great thread, that is a day burned into my mind forever..... I work just outside of DC, just inside the beltway in Springfield Va. just south-east of the Pentagon...... Some friends of mine and I were standing outside talking about the Towers being hit when a passenger jet flew extremely low and fast almost directly over us...... I could see the passengers faces through the windows...... we all commented on the plane, I went back inside and 2-3 minutes later I heard on the radio that there had been an explosion at the Pentagon!

Hearing a low flying plane still gives me the feeling of mixed fear and remorse today. Those peoples faces in those windows...... I was among the very few people to ever see them before their fateful lifes ended.

these were my thoughts the day after...

NINE TWELVE O ONE

It isn't just America under attack -
Other places have felt this fear for years.
Too weary to look forward or turn back,
And drowning in our sympathetic tears.

At war with an enemy we say we do not know.
Why can't we recognize that it is we
Who have the power to heal, and to oppose
The every-day atrocities we see?

The soul would seem the likely place to find
The peace we seek, but do not often reach.
An eye for an eye leaves everybody blind -
Perhaps we do not practice what we preach.

"I love you" seems so small a thing to say,
Considering that we may not be too long
Upon this earth - for ours are numbered days.
Still, love's the only way to right a wrong.

A chilling story, Taz. A beautiful & touching picture, Ann. I'm glad we remember those lost souls, 8 years later - thanks, colagirl.

Ann..thank you for the picture.

Taz..I got the chills when I read of your experience.

My brother in law had just left the one of the towers two hours earlier.

My sister was in NYC working that day.

Two friends of mine died that day...one, was a my boyfriend my freshman year of high school.

I too will pause, and pray today.

Peace.

That day touched many lifes, my family was really shook, they had no idea if I was okay or not. As I drove home that day south bound on 95 every person on the road was visibly shaken, military convoys were heading north towards DC on 95.

One of my daughters had a class mate who was pulled out of class.............. her father had died in the Pentagon.

To show what type of men and women we have defending our country, the military people stationed at the Pentagon we not running away from the Pentagon, they were running TO the Pentagon to help thier bretheren and make sure WE were safe as well.

9-11 brought America together as Pearl Harbor did.

The terrorist failed that day, they like the Japenese at Pearl had awakened a sleeping giant! A giant that is not be messed with!

Thanks colagirl. This thread has got to be a best of for SR.

Such a sad day for America. So many souls lost as a result of what happened on this day 8 years ago. What could they have given this world had they not died? We will never know. What could their children and their children's children given this world? We will never know. Such a sad day for this world that so many died across the globe due to this senseless act of violence.

Pray that this sort of thing never happens ever again, anywhere. The innocent ones are who are paying the price for the acts of the guilty.

As for the New Yorkers and any other people on Earth who lost friends and families. I honor you and I pray that you are healing from this terrible pain you have endured.

To all my friends on SR, have a peaceful 9/11.

I was at work starting to check my emails when the radio said that there were reports of a small plane hitting the World Trade Center. Everyone was so confused as to what had happened. I went into the lunch room where we had a tv with cable. We were all watching CNN and looking at that tower smoldering when we saw the second plane hit. I will never forget that sight.

We watched that morning as the word came on the Pentagon. We watched as the towers fell. My heart went out to the people in New York and DC - it was horrifying just watching it on tv. I couldn't imagine living it.

When the plane went down in PA they were unsure exactly where. I hoped it wasn't near my mother in law and called her to check on her.

I remember being worried about my six year old son, in his elementary school, even though logic told me that nobody was going to bother the kids in our little school out in the country.

I will never forget that day as long as I live. I thank those people - military, police, and fire fighters - who put their lives on the line every day so that we can stay safe.

My Seniors were in the 4th grade when the 9-11 attacks occured; they only knew of the twin towers being attacked. They knew nothing of the Pentagon or the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, presumably on its way to the White House.

My Freshmen were in the first grade at the time. They remembered almost nothing of it; only their mothers crying; adults upset.

Today, my students learned.
Education is good.
We will never forget!

Shalom!
