deer season
hi all,
still fighting to quit, have cut back dramatically, now comes deer season which in upper michigan is a drunk of no compare.
i find myself very lonely after 30+ years of getting drunk on a daily basis, now deer season an annual ritual of getting plastered that i am tempted to join in with my family and friends and try to drink responsibly any thoughts or suggestions ????????????????
thanks mac......................

Mac,
Welcome to SR first of all. I worked in Wisconsin for several years and know all about the deer hunting traditions....as they are basically the same. Only you can make the appropriate choices here. I personally would not go due to the temptation. I now live back out West and will not be going Elk hunting this year (even though I REALLY want to go). We do not have a drinking outing like in the Midwest out here but there is still some drinking taking place at night. So, I will be staying away until next season. Good luck and best wishes.

I say put down the booze.
Oh-and arm the deer (LOL) -it's only fair after all, and frankly-booze and guns?Never a good combination.A friend of mine lost their son that way.Not a happy story.
What does your recovery mean to you?One hunting trip is worth the sacrifice if you truly want to live and have a better life.
There will be other hunting trips.
Jules.

Hmm...30 years of drinking and it's time to hunt?
And then there are the hholidays soon
It's soooo cold in the winter
Springtime drinking is not too bad
Summer and the weather says Partytime!
Oh then .... hunting and football again... ...Gosh!
When is the best time to quit?
Are you waiting for your liver and heart failure?
A prison sentence for crazy actions ..like a fatal accident?
For your mind to slip into mush?
Gee...how important is alcohol to you?
That is the final question from me.
Don't need to answer me...just want you to consider.
Choose well...the life you save can be your own.

After 30+ years of drinking, do you think you can handle being around friends and family who are getting plastered and maintain moderation?
I couldn't.
The addiction would lie to me and tell me that I was not as bad as the others.
The addiction would lie to me and tell me that I could cut back again later.
The addiction would lie to me and tell me I would be so lonely if I missed out on 'the tradition.'
The addiction would lie to me and tell me I need to be there to watch over the others.
The addiction lies. The truth is that I was as bad as the others, or worse.
It took a long time before I was able to attempt moderation again. My physical and mental health suffered because of the binges.
I was only lonely if I wanted to be. There are sober people available here 24/7 or meetings.
Also, supervising drunks puts me in harms way. I can handle situations with clarity while sober. I can not control the actions of others while they are drunk.

Hi Mac,
I'm from Virginia and we have our deer hunting traditions also. This will be the first time I've hunted in almost 20 years. I have to go this year because my usual source of deer burger and deer baloney told me no hunt no grubstake. So, I'm going with a friend that's in recovery.
We plan on starting a new tradition.

I would try to savor being away from the grind and enjoy the outdoors no matter how cold or warm it is. You should know what it feels like to be drunk. try to remember when you hunted before you could drink.
