Thumbs down Increased thirst for days after drinking??

I have been drinking anywhere from 6-8 beers (and sometimes gin) almost every day for several years although I have recently been drinking much less often and in much smaller amounts. Often when I drink, the next morning I will wake up very "dry" and thirsty. Sometimes I will get so thirsty in the middle of the night that I will even have dreams about drinking water. Often, I will wake up the next morning after a night of drinking and gulp down 2-3 big glasses of water and then go back for even more later. Every so often (and this is one of those times) I will stay thirsty for days and since I am a HUGE Hypochodriac ("health anxiety") and suffer from panic attacks, I'm always thinking that because I'm thirsty it must be a sign of rabies or diabetes even though in the back of my mind, I'm quite sure it is simply dehydration caused by the alcohol. This morning, I woke up, turned on the light and my eyes were extremely sensitive to it but pretty soon my eyes adjusted but I was still thinking "uh-oh...thirst+light sensitivity=rabies!!" and I had a panic attack over this which soon went away after I took an Ativan. Incidentally, I have been SOBER for two days now and although detox is tough, it feels WONDERFUL to actually wake up SOBER in the mornings!.

Anyway, is the thirst, dreams about water, etc normal after alcohol consumption?. I'm not to woried about the "light" thing because I think it's pretty normal for your eyes to have to adjust when you first wake up in the morning.

- Thank you for the input!

Sounds like your body is trying to get what it needs. Thirst is common after drinking because your body is trying to rehydrate. I found that sports drinks diluted with water really hit the spot.

Also, try eating a small meal every couple of hours. If you're like me, my body had some catching up to do. Be good to yourself.

Keep well

Alcohol takes a big toll on our bodies. Alcohol
absorbs, drys you out. That why when i see
the affects of what alcohol does to someone
they look older or just plain old. Wrinkly....

Ur body is craving fluid...water....ur body
acts like a sponge and drinking lots of water
everyday is advised. Alcohol only dries it up.

As a suggestion only....I would see ur physician
for a check up...to see where ur health stands....

Being completely honest with ur physician and I
mean honest, he can advise u and guide u in suggestions
to help your body get healthy....all the way from
eating right, to sleeping, to anxiety and depression'
issues.

Then the next suggestion would be to
find an AA meeting near ur home and
go. Introduce urself and ask for help.

Here in SR we can guide u and suggest
things to you to help u get sober and stay
sober , but it will have to be u to do some
foot work.

People in those meetings have been where u r.
Just like me and countless others....The
ones that are sober and have stayed sober
are the ones that took those baby steps with
others helping them....u dont have to get sober
by urself...

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the Grace of my Higher Power and
people like u here in SR I havent had
a drink of alcohol since 8-11-90. For
that and u im truely grateful.

I didnt walk into AA by myself. It was
thru family intervention and a court
order that allowed the police to come
to my home and take me to rehab after
i tried to end my miserable life 16 yrs ago.

Thank God that attempt didnt follow thru are
i wouldnt be here to share my ESH with
u and others.

We r here to help you so keep asking
questions and others will be along shortly to
help u.

Thanks for letting me share.

As you are concerned you need a medical opinion.
Ask for a blood sugar test to rule out diabetes.

I drank a lot of alcohol and now I drink a lot of other
liquids. I always have something nearby..
I am a diabetic.

You can not have rabies...unless you have been bitten
by a rabid carrier.

Well done on your sober time..
Keep in focus..
