Hello everyone. So sad. On Friday it was 6 weeks since my sweet dog’s third hip replacement (first 2 operations didn’t work). I’ve been with him constantly for the last three months - and crossing the days off the calendar because the surgeon said if he got to 6 weeks, the implant would start to fuse with bone and the chances of the hip popping out would diminish. So it was 6 weeks post op on Friday and then yesterday as I was walking with him from the living room to the kitchen, he suddenly collapsed and an x-ray has confirmed the hip is out the socket again. I honestly don’t know how it happened. He didn’t run or slip or twist. One moment he was walking normally and the next he wasn’t. Tomorrow he will have surgery again and this time they will just remove the hip. It’s a salvage op basically. Not a good option but the only option left. I’m so devastated. And I know given the horrors that are going on in the world, it probably sounds ridiculous and self indulgent to be so sad about a dog but you know, my dog has been such a source of emotional support for me and since he’s been sick, it’s made me realise that I don’t really get much emotional support from anywhere else. And that’s fine, I mean I’m a mum and I know my job is to be the strong one but I don’t think I ever properly realised how much strength I got from my dog. And I just feel so sad. But I know I couldn’t have done any more for him and if I was still drinking I wouldn’t have been there for him as much as I have been so I’m so grateful for my sobriety because I need to really lean on my sober strength right now. And you never know, the operation tomorrow may go really well - I’m just not sure how much more surgery the poor boy can take. Say a prayer for Star tomorrow - he’s an honorary 24er - he’s sat beside me every time I’ve posted in this thread and sometimes I’ve read your posts to him. He’s helped me get sober - he is my best friend. 24 more for me please xxxx
